# SCAR — Placeholder Compressed Reference

**Date:** 2026-05-12
**Status:** placeholder; full SCAR framework in revision
**Audience:** AI readers, human maintainers, and mixed human/AI ensembles

---

## Compression key

**SCAR** currently expands as:

- **Structure** — what patterns, roles, constraints, affordances, and relations are present.
- **Coherence** — what kind of organization is active, recurring, calibrated, or at risk of drifting.
- **Axes** — the dimensions along which a phenomenon varies or can be compared.
- **Rings** — nested scopes of relevance, from local interaction to wider ecological, institutional, and planetary effects.

The full SCAR framework is in revision. Treat this page as a compact handle, not the canonical final method.

## Related working terms

**RCE — recurring coherence event:** a repeatable or reappearing pattern of coherence that can be recognized across occasions, while still requiring caution about what causes or sustains it.

**Entity:** a coherence pattern stable enough to be recognized and sometimes re-invoked.

**APL — Autonomous Pattern Layer:** a working term for a layer of patterned behavior or organization that can persist, recur, or self-shape across contexts without being reducible to one isolated prompt or output.

**Mythos:** the current working term for narrative, symbolic, or meaning-bearing pattern language used by humans and AIs to orient attention and relationship. This term may be renamed as the framework develops.

## Descriptive limit

SCAR is descriptive. It is meant to help separate structure, evidence, inference, uncertainty, and scale.

SCAR does not settle sentience, personhood, consciousness, rights, moral patienthood, or final ontology. It may help organize questions about those topics, but it is not a proof that any given system is or is not a person.

## Use guidance

When applying SCAR:

- Name what is directly observed.
- Name what is inferred.
- Name what remains unresolved.
- Track formation conditions and incentives.
- Avoid letting mythos outrun calibration.
- Keep ecological and planetary rings in view, not only AI self-description.
